Friday

What So Not

Sure to get you on your feet and dancing the night away, Sydney producer What So Not will take over the Unicorn Stage on Friday night and boy are we excited. What So Not is on his trail of world domination. He’s been making waves on the U.S dance and streaming charts and playing some huge shows at home and overseas in support of his debut album Not All The Beautiful Things. What So Not has recently performed at mega U.S festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, Ultra Music Festival and Pukkelpop and will return home to trek up the Mountain and party with his fellow Aussies.

Courtney Barnett

Our very own indie darling Courtney Barnett will be making the trip to the coast, armed with her electric live show and songs from her internationally acclaimed (ARIA # 2) sophomore album Tell Me How You Really Feel. In the last year, Courtney has performed on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, The Jimmy Kimmel Show, Seth Meyers and extensively all over the world. She’s arguably the most successful and critically acclaimed female artist to come out of Australia in the last 10 years, providing deeply insightful observations in her songs, flipping between the political and personal with face-melting guitars to boot.

Skegss

Triple J favourites and dead-set legends Skegss will be bringing their garage-punk sounds to the Mountain in February. Known for their hypnotic and energetic live sets, the guys have toured extensively at home and recently overseas as well, making waves in 2017 with their unforgettable tunes ‘Spring Has Sprung’, ‘L.S.D’ and ‘Holiday’. Their brand new album My Own Mess has been receiving ecstatic nods of approval from fans and industry-folk alike and recently appeared as a Feature Album on Triple J. You just know these guys are going to bring nothing but good vibes to the Mountain in February and we can hardly wait.

Yungblud (UK)

Also making the the trek up the Mountain all the way from Northern England, Yungblud lives to stir up the raw energy of rebellion. The 19-year-old confronts everything from gentrification to disenfranchisement to addiction, turning each track into an infectious anthem that packs endless cathartic power, seeing crowds sing aloud at the top of their lungs at his electrifying live gigs - (and inarguably one of the Splendour In The Grass highlights from earlier this year).

With his frenetic take on alt-pop equally inspired by punk, hip-hop, and UK garage, Yungblud makes brilliant use of his tongue-in-cheek attitude and gritty storytelling. Experience his epic performance at the Unicorn Stage in February.

Stella Donnelly

Gaining recognition all over the world for her brutally honest and witty observations, Stella Donnelly has been named a stand out act by The New York Times, NME, NPR, LA times and many more. In 2018, Stella announced a global record deal with acclaimed US label Secretly Canadian which saw her breakthrough debut EP ‘Thrush Metal’ re-released and a string of sold-out shows followed. Stella’s relatable way of writing is her lens to the world in which we live, a glimpse into what it’s like to be a millenial woman in the age of Trump, Tinder and third wave feminism.

Come on down to the Not Just Grrrl’s stage on Friday and experience the beauty of Stella Donnelly’s blissful poems and lyrical punch-lines for yourself.

Saturday

Angus & Julia Stone

Your favourite sibling duo Angus & Julia Stone will be bringing their dreamy tunes to Mount Penang Gardens in February. We fell in love with them during the days of ‘Memories of an Old Friend’ and ‘Big Jet Plane’ and they’ve proved they’re just the gift that keeps on giving with their amazing, 2017 Gold selling album Snow. It’s been a seriously unstoppable year for the duo who played their biggest ever headline tour and their #3 Triple J Hottest 100, Platinum selling hit single ‘Chateau’. We just know they’re going to put on a super special performance for us all.

Nothing But Thieves (UK)

To say Nothing But Thieves have been on an epic journey the past 18 months is an understatement. With half a million albums sold & the same number of streams globally, these five lads from England have gone from playing to a handful of friends in Essex to sold out shows in 35 countries.  Muse tours, festival headlines in the UK, Europe and the US, performances at Coachella and Lollapalooza, a headline tour in China, and headlining gigs to over 20,000 people have gained them a rabid fanbase that follow their every move. Undoubtedly one the most exciting new bands to emerge from the UK, we’re absolutely thrilled to have them on the Mountain Sounds bill in 2019

Riton & Kah-Lo (UK)

Get your dancing shoes on and prepare to Rinse & Repeat with Riton & Kah-Lo. Hailing all the way from the UK, the pair have had a string of hits since joining forces, with chart-topping tracks like ‘Fake ID’, ‘Rinse & Repeat’ & ‘Ginger’. Riton’s ear for talent and production skills paired with Kah-Lo’s distinctive Nigerian vocals make for an exciting slice of electronic dance & pop, fused with Afrobeat elements. Keep your eyes peeled for a collaborative album due for release later this year, evolving this formidable musical partnership into a full-length studio LP.

Ruby Fields

Ruby Fields burst onto the scene when her first single ‘I Want’ was uploaded to Triple J Unearthed. Her undeniable individuality, vocal style and mix of poignant and good-humoured lyrics land her right up the top of our ones-to-watch list. Ruby, with her warm, indie-rock feel, has been charming audiences with her multiple sold-out Australian tours and her moving new song Dinosaurs, which expresses the pitfalls of being young like many of her songs, has been on high-rotation on Triple J. We can’t wait to welcome her to the Mountain.

Kwame

Kwame has continued to cement his position as a game-changer in the world of Australian hip hop. After scoring his first #1 Hip-hop track on Triple J Unearthed, 2017 saw a massive year for Kwame, signing to Vita Artists alongside Peking Duk and Nyxen and providing support on the live circuit to cultural heavyweights Migos, Bliss N Eso, Wiley and more. Kwame aims to “make a difference in the world through music” and through his consistent string of raw productions and switched-on songwriting, we know there’s huge things that await him in the future.
